Can Diet and Exercise Improve MS?

So I’m about to start a new book pertaining to MS and better health: The Wahls Protocol by Terry Wahls, MD. I hafta admit that I’m skeptical about anyone claiming to cure their own multiple sclerosis, especially through diet and exercise alone. However, I’m always open to better eating habits and exercise ideas. This woman apparently was wheelchair-bound and through her own research found a way to recover from autoimmune disease. She can now bicycle many miles….There seems to be a correlation with the Paleo diet, which touts eating more like our ancient ancestors and avoiding some of the modern day food traps (I need to actually read the book to know more about this!).

So here goes nothing…. I’ll have more to report when I’m finished….

PS: I am slowly getting better over here, too. Feeling about 80 – 85% of my “normal” self since this recent attack began last month. Stay tuned for more on this as well. : )

  • I’m curious about this book – and MS management strategy – too. Like you, I’m skeptical of anyone claiming to “cure” MS through diet and exercise alone, but after more than a decade of living with this illness (and injecting myself with a disease-modifying therapy) I now believe that lifestyle factors ARE important and should form part of my wellness plan. I take vitamin D, I’m watching what I eat, I’m drinking more water, and I’ve started to exercise. Stringent diets like Dr. Wahl’s seem difficult to incorporate into a family meal plan, with competing likes and dislikes, but I’ll read her book and use what I can.

    Suzanne–

I wonder too if I can limit myself (dairy-free/gluten-free). I can surely ADD good foods, but when it’s time to subtract, maybe not so much. I take vit D, but not on a regular basis. I’m about a third of the way through the book….I’ll have a better picture and more to report when I’m done.

    Thanks for your response.

Honestly it is a VERY strict diet.

But when it comes to MS and with what we have to lose with this terrible disease, I would eat wood chips if I had to.

I haven’t implemented many of the dietary changes yet, Matt. More due to the cost of eating better, really. I’ve done smoothies with vegetables and fruits before and I find that easier than making the change to dairy-free and gluten-free foods (price-wise, anyway). I do wish eating healthy was not such a financial investment, but I’m slowly working on making small (affordable) changes.
